The Influence of Slow-Paced Breathing on Executive Function

چکیده
Abstract. The aim of this experiment was to test the immediate effects slow-paced breathing on executive function. Slow-paced is suggested increase cardiac vagal activity, and neurovisceral integration model predicts that higher activity leads better functioning. In total, 78 participants (41 men, 37 women; M age = 23.22 years) took part in two counterbalanced experimental conditions: a 3 × 5 min condition television viewing control condition. After each condition, heart rate variability measured performed three function tasks: color-word match Stroop (inhibition), automated operation span task (working memory), modified card sorting (cognitive flexibility). Results showed performance tasks after compared control, with scores observed for interference accuracy, score, perseverative errors, but not reaction times. This difference between conditions mediated by activity. Therefore, findings only partially align predictions model. appears promising technique improve performance. Further studies are recommended address possible alternative underlying mechanisms long-term effects.

The effects of slow-paced versus mechanically assisted breathing on autonomic function in fibromyalgia patients
Paced breathing has shown efficacy in fibromyalgia (FM), but the mechanisms associated with symptom change are largely unknown. We investigated whether changes in respiratory rate (RR) alone resulted in autonomic changes during normal, paced, and mechanically assisted breathing in untrained FM patients and controls. Participants included 20 FM patients and 14 controls matched for age and body m...

Positive emotion reduces dyspnea during slow paced breathing.
Slow breathing is used to induce cardiovascular resonance, a state associated with health benefits, but it can also increase tidal volume and associated dyspnea (respiratory discomfort). Dyspnea may be decreased by induced positive affect. In this study, 71 subjects (36 men, M = 20 years) breathed at 6 breaths per min. In condition one, subjects paced their breathing by inhaling and exhaling as...
متن کاملA Pilot Study on the Effects of Slow Paced Breathing on Current Food Craving
Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) involves slow paced breathing (approximately six breaths per minute), thereby maximizing low-frequent heart rate oscillations and baroreflex gain. Mounting evidence suggests that HRV-BF promotes symptom reductions in a variety of physical and mental disorders. It may also positively affect eating behavior by reducing food cravings. The aim of the curr...
